We know that they are essential for those who are deaf/hard of hearing, but they can benefit many people in a variety of ways - for example, I always watch TV with captions on in case I miss something so I don't have to rewind.<br />
<br />
My friend <a href="http://twitter.com/@noasbobs" target="_blank">Noa</a> reached out this morning to ask how to create caption in YouTube. I explained that captions are auto-generated in YouTube and that the video create can edit them. <br />
<br />
I made this 3 minute video explaining how you can edit the auto-generated caption in YouTube. Written directions are below.<br />

<li style="margin: 0.25rem 0px 0.25rem 1.25rem;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">For the language you’d like to edit, in the “Subtitles” column, select <b>Options</b> (the timbits) <img alt="" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e76r_RF5u4d8F2EpJfsc7taQT9fr9JvJ5yhNtWmVn-Pjr0e8Xif4LxE7mKTJuw=w18" style="max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="18" /> --> <b>Edit in Classic Studio</b>.</span></li>

We are fortunately to be a tech rich household. My husband has his PC laptop, I have my Macbook Pro laptop, My oldest son has an iPad and my younger sons each have a Chromebook. We also have 4 iPhones to use between the 5 of us (two are old ones with no SIM card so are more like iPods since they can't make calls and have no data but can access wifi). One of the challenges we have faced in when the boys (who are in grades 2 & 4) do work that we need to photograph and put on a Google Slide (for example). With our older son it was easy, take a photo, airdrop it to his iPad...but for the other guys - no such luck - <b><u>until now</u></b>!!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our old workflow was as follows:</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Take a picture on my phone</li>
<li>Airdrop it to my Mac.</li>
<li>Log in to child's Chrome Profile on my Mac</li>
<li>Upload it to their Google Drive</li>
<li>Remind child, who has lost all focus, that we are still working on <b><u><i>THEIR</i></u></b> work.</li>
<li>Child whines a lot, finds the file and uploads it to the Slide.</li>
</ol>
<div>
Then, my friend <a href="https://twitter.com/CharleboisJoel" target="_blank">Joel Charlebois</a> told me about <a href="http://snapdrop.net/" target="_blank">Snapdrop</a>. #GAMECHANGER. It is, as they "the easiest way to transfer files across devices" on the same wifi network.</div>

I have bookmarked <a href="http://snapdrop.net/" target="_blank">Snapdrop</a> on each device in the house (and <a href="https://weeverapps.com/knowledge-base/how-do-i-add-the-app-icon-to-my-home-screen-on-an-apple-device-iphone-or-ipad/" target="_blank">added it to my homescreen</a> on the my iPhone). Now, when we take a picture on one device, we simply open Snapdop on the device with the image and on the the device we want to receive the image. (In Snapdrop you see all the devices on the network with Snapdrop open - as in the image below)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2JPHFWG5n6pE2K6tB5bW_0li9TLfK1xAqJWcY_PeOEhsDoNvYZ01aHwqdvNZmUtyAV9k1laXsPyOHnQIGMHULP9beRqCB-yFjzP4D-mWmmOjDLoPI-pX5Mg_uBPLd1uClfk8hiI8PuaQf/s1600/Screenshot+2020-04-30+at+3.02.46+PM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2JPHFWG5n6pE2K6tB5bW_0li9TLfK1xAqJWcY_PeOEhsDoNvYZ01aHwqdvNZmUtyAV9k1laXsPyOHnQIGMHULP9beRqCB-yFjzP4D-mWmmOjDLoPI-pX5Mg_uBPLd1uClfk8hiI8PuaQf/s320/Screenshot+2020-04-30+at+3.02.46+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
From the device with the image, click the device to which you want to transfer. A dialog box will open showing the files on your device. Find and click the file you want to send. The receiving computer will see that a file is being transferred.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyG7dDwWjBQX8HhEYoIbMC3a-0SGjpG2fZB-uqoBcEe9MDqgn3nZl2q8h4HS2tmSIZpqHn2fIKJ953oaks0G-DfKIDZdWD-CvkeXX20agAybHPc1_TADsbJzMXHzJUS4TBSFpp4eE87OH3/s1600/Screenshot+2020-04-30+at+3.06.29+PM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyG7dDwWjBQX8HhEYoIbMC3a-0SGjpG2fZB-uqoBcEe9MDqgn3nZl2q8h4HS2tmSIZpqHn2fIKJ953oaks0G-DfKIDZdWD-CvkeXX20agAybHPc1_TADsbJzMXHzJUS4TBSFpp4eE87OH3/s320/Screenshot+2020-04-30+at+3.06.29+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When the transfer is complete, it will ask if you want to download the file to your device. If you do, click download, if not, click ignore.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipm44STAH6PqR9KlrGvPiLZks28LQgE7LB3_KlbaylVKJucDbjZIjrT17w11KL6JsL8_hJnR62V39tygsWY1txBkUBsL9yqLqprVREiuoqSwSjxy-d2gLTjK5t1o2iQ9qEpsC0LakoqbRA/s1600/Screenshot+2020-04-30+at+3.06.35+PM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="166" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipm44STAH6PqR9KlrGvPiLZks28LQgE7LB3_KlbaylVKJucDbjZIjrT17w11KL6JsL8_hJnR62V39tygsWY1txBkUBsL9yqLqprVREiuoqSwSjxy-d2gLTjK5t1o2iQ9qEpsC0LakoqbRA/s320/Screenshot+2020-04-30+at+3.06.35+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you choose to download the file, a dialog box will open asking where on the device you want to store the file. Select your destination and the file is now saved on that device!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It is a great way to transfer across platforms as it work on iOS, MacOS, Android, Windows, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Also, you can send messages from one computer to another by right clicking the device name (or long holding on a mobile device). A message box will appear, you can type a message and hit send. The message will appear on that device where Snapdrop is open.</div>

</ol>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Step 2: Upload the audio file to your Google Drive</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ol>
<li>Go to your <a href="http://drive.google.com/" target="_blank">Google Drive.</a></li>
<li><b><i>Optional</i></b>: Create a folder for all your audio files. </li>
<ul>
<li>To create a folder:</li>
<ul>
<li>Click <b>New</b> --> <b>Folder</b> --> <i>Name it</i> (e.g., Audio recordings)</li>
</ul>
<li><b><i><span style="color: red;">DON'T FORGET TO MAKE YOUR FOLDER (or just file if you don't make a folder) VISIBLE TO PEOPLE.</span></i></b></li>

It allows for drawing, inserting typed text and LaTeX math. Darren showcases the tool nicely in this video (consider subscribing, he's got good Google stuff on there!):</span><br />
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/qk6zNdxWVhs/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qk6zNdxWVhs?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">So, of course, I jump on my computer to give it a try and here are my initial thoughts:</span><br />
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;"><b>Pros:</b></span><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">Simple integration of a whiteboard - note you need to be in Present mode then start the whiteboard or only you will see it.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">Math and chem formulas enter easily with LaTeX.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">Slick interface as the buttons appear on the bottom bar.</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;"><b>Cons</b></span><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">The raise hand feature wasn't working for me - only the person with the raises hand saw their hand was raised. Apparently there can be up to a 20 second delay - and truth be told I did it quickly.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">Can't see the chat etc. when activated, take sthe whole window (when i saw this I was hoping it was a little screen within the Meet window, but alas, no.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">Can't insert an image to annotate (Jamboard much more dynamic).</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;">Apparently the creator's server is maxed out so not sure if it might start crashing.</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="color: #263238; font-family: inherit;"><b>Overall</b> - simple for a quick whiteboard, good for beginner users, personally I would stick with <a href="http://jamboard.google.com/" target="_blank">Jamboard</a>, <a href="https://awwapp.com/" target="_blank">AWW App</a> or <a href="https://whiteboard.fi/" target="_blank">Whitebord.fi </a>for anything beyond a basic need to show something quickly.</span>Jen Giffenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01601040540077581038noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8967231018531866202.post-69846456820509986062020-04-13T15:34:00.004-07:002020-04-13T15:35:35.339-07:007 Google Classroom Tips for TeachersIn this time of <b>Emergency Remote Learning</b> (I purposely call it that thanks for AJ Juliani's points in this <a href="http://ajjuliani.com/this-is-not-online-or-distance-learning/">blog post</a>), many teachers are using <a href="http://classroom.google.com/">Google Classroom</a> more and more. Some are comfortable with the tool, others are brand new.<br />

For those who are familiar with Google Classroom and want a few pro tips - I have create a slide deck which has 7 Google Classroom tips for teachers including:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Creating and accessing the Comments Bank, </li>
<li>Quickly Switching between student work when grading, </li>
<li>Annotating student work in the mobile app, </li>
<li>Tagging Students in comments, </li>
<li>Managing notifications (to free up your inbox!), </li>
<li>Adding audio instruction and feedback</li>
<li>Adding video instructions!</li>

<br />
We are in a pandemic - and I am worried. Not about contracting COVID-19 but about my well being, and the well being of other teacher parents, during school closures due to the pandemic.<br />
<br />
<div>
<a href="https://render.bitstrips.com/v2/cpanel/2a868b5c-832d-4e73-9574-3fdd3874d5aa-35a87003-6e6a-4a75-a0b8-a82eda8d66f1-v1.png?transparent=1&palette=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Bitmoji Image" border="0" height="200" src="https://render.bitstrips.com/v2/cpanel/2a868b5c-832d-4e73-9574-3fdd3874d5aa-35a87003-6e6a-4a75-a0b8-a82eda8d66f1-v1.png?transparent=1&palette=1" width="199" /></a>You see, I am a perfectionist. My standards are high - and the ones I often place on myself can be unattainable at times. I know I am not alone in this.</div>
<div>
<br />
I have watched my Twitter feed explode with people sharing plans of how to support learning from a distance as schools close. I wait in anticipation the <a href="https://news.ontario.ca/opo/en/2020/3/title.html">plan Ontario government says it will provide in the near future</a> to help navigate these unknown waters. I see article after article touting the latest EdTech companies that have made all premium features free for the next while to support distance learning (like this <a href="http://www.amazingeducationalresources.com/">list</a> or this <a href="https://wakelet.com/wake/f7f386e7-29cc-4d60-819b-53f49b6f3ac8">Wakelet</a> created by my friend <a href="http://twitter.com/bribriggs">Brian Briggs</a>). It is such great stuff!! I get so excited about all that I will be able to do, I begin digitally hoarding, writing pseudo lesson plans for my children and my students in preparation. And then the panic sets in. <br />
<br />
The more I read, the more I feel like I am going to do it all wrong. Perfection Paralysis. The more I know, the less competent I seem to feel. I want to capitalize on all the great things out there. I know the phenomenal learning environment I stand to create for my children. BUT….<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://render.bitstrips.com/v2/cpanel/a3266469-0e26-4d46-953a-2c76c54f5e6d-35a87003-6e6a-4a75-a0b8-a82eda8d66f1-v1.png?transparent=1&palette=1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://render.bitstrips.com/v2/cpanel/a3266469-0e26-4d46-953a-2c76c54f5e6d-35a87003-6e6a-4a75-a0b8-a82eda8d66f1-v1.png?transparent=1&palette=1" width="199" /></a>I am a teacher, but I am not a homeschooler. When I work at my school I have a live support system. I can bat around ideas with others teaching the same thing, the same kids. I have resources at my disposal. I have a lunch hour, prep time. I have an escape when I go home at the end of the day - a change of pace. With the school closure, I do not.<br />
<br />
Teaching our own children is different. I will be dealing with sibling rivalry, keeping kids quiet while my husband (who works on commission) takes phone calls as his office has been socially responsible and closed for a few weeks too. Our normal weekend attitude is pretty laissez-faire - weekends are for rest and rejuvenation, this will be a shift for all of us.<br />
<br />
I know what good teaching looks like, and I don’t want to mess this up. I find myself learning two new curriculums to meet my children’s needs, to make sure they don’t “fall behind” (of what or whom I am not sure). I am digitally hoarding activities that would be “perfect” to “get us through” these three weeks - both my own children and the children I serve.<br />
<br />
Then there is the added pressure to support our students from afar. How can I support them when the relationships we have built were in person. How will I tell that Bryan is having a bad day when I can’t see how he sits in his chairs (his “tell sign” for his mood). What about the moral support my crew of girls needs at lunch when they visit me in the Library. What about the kids who come in every day because this is where they feel comfortable? I read that social isolation leads to increased episodes of <a href="https://anygoodthing.com/2020/03/12/please-do-a-bad-job-of-putting-your-courses-online/">domestic violence</a>. How can we help when we are not there? We all know that teaching is not 9-3, summers off. And when we can’t be there, it is hard.<br />
<br />
I am worried about the expectations I will put on myself - that WE will put on ourselves. <br />
<br />
I write this post to hash out some of the uncertainty, vulnerability, and anxiety I am feeling. And I am certain I am not the only one feeling this way. I hope others who are also feeling this way can find solace that they are not alone in these feelings, and I hope that the discussions it might provoke will take us all to a place that will help us give ourselves the break we need.<br />
<br />
Here are a few things my (rational) inner voice is saying to me now:<br />
<ol><a href="https://render.bitstrips.com/v2/cpanel/19ac1a49-0a58-4d1a-b0d3-92906fa50286-35a87003-6e6a-4a75-a0b8-a82eda8d66f1-v1.png?transparent=1&palette=1" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Bitmoji Image" border="0" height="200" src="https://render.bitstrips.com/v2/cpanel/19ac1a49-0a58-4d1a-b0d3-92906fa50286-35a87003-6e6a-4a75-a0b8-a82eda8d66f1-v1.png?transparent=1&palette=1" width="199" /></a></ol>
<ol>
<li>Find Balance</li>
<li>Leverage the tools available - but not all of them. Pick a few - if kids (your own or the ones that are yours usually from 9-3) like it, stick with it. With all the changes some stability is good.</li>
<li>Online is not the only way - while I love me my EdTech unplugging often works better for my kids. This is a great resource listing ways to <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1FnwwnpP7_-6bZBVAsIDyukAUdqapC-lxxybYC7FK1tA/edit#slide=id.g6046610587_0_324">meet curriculum offline at home</a> from <a href="http://teitter.com/@Filibuster3">Karyn Fillhart</a></li>
<li>Think of this as a sort of co-op - give kids some of that “real world” learning we talk about so often - teach them how to make a meal, do some yard work, heck, bird watching!</li>
<li>We remember learning experiences over the specific lesson.</li>
<li>Get outside - we can all use recess!</li>
<li>When social media hijacks you emotionally, shut it down or go down another rabbit hole like I did today with #DoodleAndChat (thanks <a href="http://twitter.com/heckawesome">Carrie</a>!) or follow accounts on Instagram like the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/goodnews_movement/?hl=en">Good News Movement</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/upworthy/?hl=en">Upworthy</a>.</li>
<li>Take this time to do the little things you have been wanting to do but just could find the time and make it a learning opportunity.</li>
<li>Set realistic expectations - we should feel more rested, not more stressed. Social distancing is meant to keep us healthy - let's make sure that is in all aspects.</li>
<li>Don’t compare. As hard as it is.</li>
<li>Share your feelings with those around you.</li>
<li>If your children go to bed saying the day was fun - that’s a win</li>
<li>If your children go to bed saying the day sucked - that’s not a fail</li>
<li>Above all, remember perfection is a four-letter word</li>
</ol>
Stay well.<br />

As you may know, I am the co-host of a podcast called <a href="http://shukesandgiff.com/" target="_blank">Shukes and Giff the Podcast</a>. It is a fun passion project I do with my friend and colleague <a href="http://kimpollishuke.com/" target="_blank">Kim Pollishuke</a>. We are by no means expert podcasters, in fact, we often joke about how unpolished our practices are when we talk about our "fancy high tech mic".</div>

Truth be told we have spent more money on promo stickers than on recording equipment!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When we set out on our podcasting adventure Kim and I wanted to create something that could be replicated in the classroom - something easy and free! We settled on <a href="http://anchor.fm/" target="_blank">Anchor</a>. It works for us. We love that it is cloud-based and works on all platforms. But for some, there are still privacy concerns - especially for educators working with students under 13 years of age. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a few different options for tacking this hurdle, like <a href="https://blog.flipgrid.com/news/andrew" target="_blank">Andrew Fenstermaker's suggestion to use Flipgrid for podcasting</a>. But then this afternoon I was listening to <a href="http://houseofedtech.libsyn.com/website" target="_blank">Chris Nesi's House of EdTech</a> podcast and something dawned on me....why not use the (relatively) new insert audio feature and simply host podcasts on Google Slides?!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>Note: I used Chrome to do this and it seems to be the browser that works best. Others have reported errors with inserting audio in other browsers (e.g., Brave)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Here's is my workflow. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Have students design a podcast logo</li>
<li>Have students record the audio for an episode (or a few episodes). This can be done on a device with audio recording or by using something like <a href="https://imclient.herokuapp.com/audiorecorder/" target="_blank">Cloud Audio Recorder</a> that does not require an account but can be linked to save to one's Google Drive. <i>(If you/students want to get fancy and edit, check out <a href="https://www.bearaudiotool.com/" target="_blank">Bear Audio</a> - free and cloud-based.) </i>No matter your method, have students upload audio to their Google Drive.</li>
<li>Create a slide deck for each student podcast OR the entire class.</li>
<ul>
<li>If you choose to do one deck per student, have them put their logo on the title slide and then each slide can be an episode. They could also include episode notes on this slide.</li>
<ul>
<li><i>If you do this you could make a Class Google Site and upload each podcast slide deck to the site.</i></li>
</ul>
<li>If you choose to do an entire class deck, have a Class podcasts intro page with all the logos on it. Have each logo link to a slide in the deck. Each slide in the deck is reserved for each individual podcast.</li>
</ul>
<li>On the podcast show slide, choose <b>Insert</b> --> <b>Audio</b> and link the audio from step 2.</li>
</ol>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Voila! Instant podcasts housed completely in Google Drive that can be kept private for the teacher and student, or, my preference, shared with the class or district - or beyond with permission. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While this method does not push to main podcatchers (Apple Podcasts, Google Play, etc.), it does provide a walled garden wherein students can share their ideas in a less traditional structure.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are some very simple deck mockups. (Click to open the actual deck.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Static Logo By Nancy Watson</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
This week we were tasked with making a logo and some classmates created some great stuff. There was one, in particular, I really liked and I suggested that the creator (<a href="https://twitter.com/NancyWTech" target="_blank">Nancy Watson</a>), also consider creating an animated version. When she asked how to do it, I created the video below and thought I would share for others who might be interested.<br />
<br />
Basically, you need to duplicate a slide ever to slightly and then use the <a href="https://gsuite.google.com/marketplace/app/creator_studio/509621243108" target="_blank">Creator Studio add-on</a> for <a href="http://slides.google.com/" target="_blank">Google Slides</a>. It takes some time, but the end result can be pretty great.<br />

Aside from the excitement that December usually holds with the holidays and time off, I always look forward to <a href="http://ditchthattextbook.com/" target="_blank">Matt Miller</a>'s annual <a href="http://ditchsummit.com/" target="_blank">#DitchSummit</a>. Touted as PD on your couch, Matt assembles a great line up of guests and releases one video a day over the holidays, keeping them up until school resumes in January. (There might be still time to <a href="http://ditchsummit.com/" target="_blank">sign up</a> to receive the links to the videos - they are open until Jan. 8 2020! Bonus - you get all past videos too!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLBz5OLNuzC9OhwwI4StjURAMY3_jPRnKyn7EHKRcAtTEe7J3euCAF0mXgX77dV9DtGDzRH-6HFQptA3bQsIm0zguLzDeo1mJ0uWL-_yWMyGi5JCe03JUh0kkFuQ6UGNZro7fUsZyUrz94/s1600/PNG+image-394E0792B60A-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLBz5OLNuzC9OhwwI4StjURAMY3_jPRnKyn7EHKRcAtTEe7J3euCAF0mXgX77dV9DtGDzRH-6HFQptA3bQsIm0zguLzDeo1mJ0uWL-_yWMyGi5JCe03JUh0kkFuQ6UGNZro7fUsZyUrz94/s320/PNG+image-394E0792B60A-1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I not only love the learning, but I also love the time I set aside to work on my sketchnoting...a passion and skill I have built in large thanks to the Ditch Summit as I make it a priority to sketch each guest each December (see my past sketches from <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzCVwW-ep9vpWjhxQ0k3ZHRQajQ" target="_blank">2016</a>, <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=1oa384L3OCC5igC5dIRMNvmEkJlsjc2nj" target="_blank">2017</a>, and <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=18lS7jaYfVdIfntfhljZXRP_14Nj_FiRt" target="_blank">2018</a>). Each year I am reminded how much peace sketching brings me, and I am excited to see what new trick I will learn on my sketching app (I use the pro version of <a href="https://tayasui.com/sketches/" target="_blank">Tayasui Sketches</a>).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are my sketches and my biggest takeaway from this year's summit:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><span style="font-size: x-small;">(Note: you can find all my sketches from this year in this <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=1G773YUirNEIURJJnTs8f55vFGkrO6DVG" target="_blank">Google Drive folder</a>)</span></i></div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Day 1: PBL with Real Life Community Projects with <a href="https://twitter.com/OmarLopez0207" target="_blank">Omar López</a></b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved the stories Omar shared about how he asks students "<i>What problems can we solve with what we learned"</i> and his story about his students considering the non-human implications that "The Wall" would bring to a local national park.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<b>Day 2: Infusing Creativity into Teaching, Learning, and Life with <a href="https://austinkleon.com/" target="_blank">Austin Kleon</a></b><br />
I have been wanting to read Kleon's books for some time. The two lines that struck me most were that <i>perfectionism hinders future work</i> and that <i>copying from one is plagiarism but copying from many is research. </i>Aside from the learning, I fell in love with the font on the covers of his books and as a result, I found a new personal font - as you will see moving forward I am using it all the time!! <span style="font-size: x-small;">(I also won a copy of the books in a Twitter contest so that is exciting - thanks to <a href="https://twitter.com/VirtualGiff/status/1208766747345596416" target="_blank">my son Tanner for watching the video with me</a> - that's what clinched my win!)</span></div>

<span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><b>Day 3: Using Your Personal Passion to Electrify Teaching with <a href="https://twitter.com/HeRhymesWithMe" target="_blank">Toney Jackson</a></b>Toney talked about his students, many of whom have YouTube channels. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am so excited to read Matt's new book - I love his stuff...each chapter reads like a mini keynote presentation and is so inspiring. His line <i>"If class is so forgettable, how do we expect students to remember?!" </i>was very powerful<i>. </i>I also loved the idea to invest in impact.</div>

Holy app ideas, Batman! Angie, Nate, and Matt talked about so many tools we can use in all facets of our practice. Iorad was one I have seen but had forgotten about - it automagically creates step by step instructions based on mouse clicks - how cool is that?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>(I also love the little Elsa character I drew...she is just so cute! In case you are wondering about my images, they do not all come from my head. <b>Day 8: Create and Consume Immersively with AR/VR with <a href="https://twitter.com/JaimeDonally" target="_blank">Jaime Donally</a></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know we shouldn't pick favourites, but there was something about Jaime's video that really spoke to my heart. Firstly, she is so incredibly knowledgeable about AR/VR - she shared so many ideas and apps - but more than that she spoke with such passion and fluency you could really tell she walks the talk.</div>

<b>Day 9: Hands-On STEM Projects Your Students Will Love with <a href="https://twitter.com/Hacking_STEM" target="_blank">Karon Weber & Ankur Anand</a></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Finally, Karon and Ankur from Microsoft shared the FREE Hacking STEM projects that have been developed to support deep and meaningful STEM learning. Much of it looked like it was out a movie but most can be done with household items. I loved the idea of <i>"an experience in a box"</i> and look forward to their PD package to help teachers (like me) who were taught in a very traditional way and aren't always sure how to provide this sort of experience to students. </div>

<br />
I'm here! ISTE is my bucket filler. For the last three years, it has helped me build relationships, engage in great learning, and surround myself with positive energy.<br />
<br />
My plan was to microblog...and well...you know the saying...the best-laid plans of mice and men. Yesterday (what I call Day -1) was jam-packed - and I didn't pull out my laptop once. I did post on Instagram though - so <a href="https://www.instagram.com/virtualgiff/?hl=en" target="_blank">check that out</a>.<br />
<br />
That said, I did see some great things and connect with some great people. Here are some highlights:<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>ISTE Ignites</b> - They were all great but I particularly enjoyed Jen Casa-Todd and Henry Turner. Jen spoke about ensuring students have voice and the importance of adult mentorship. Henry spoke about how he turned an incident of hate into a learning opportunity to empower students.<br />

<br /><b>Lunch at the park</b> - Self-care is important - and so <a href="https://twitter.com/L_Bettencourt7" target="_blank">Lisa Bettencourt</a> and I headed out to Dilworth park for great food and phenomenal live entertainment. The best part was the connection - Lisa and I got to chat away from the hustle of the conference and She told me all about a great initiative the students at Ashbury college did in partnership with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO)...more on that later.<div>

From pedagogy, to tools, to learning, to <a href="https://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=https://cdn.elearninginfographics.com/wp-content/uploads/Cognitive-Bias.png&imgrefurl=https://elearninginfographics.com/cognitive-bias-learning-infographic/&tbnid=ba1Ii167msrgVM&vet=1&docid=CZ4dXbCOrPgJtM&w=800&h=2000&hl=en-ca&source=sh/x/im" target="_blank">bias</a>, Peter's experience runs as deep as his passion, and his down to earth delivery was perfect.</div>

I also attended a session by Leslie Boerkamp (<a href="http://twitter.com/@lboerkamp" target="_blank">@lboerkamp</a>) and Nicole Batte (<a href="http://twitter.com/@nicbatte" target="_blank">@nicbatte</a>) and it was all about my favourite things - extensions. They introduced me to a couple of new ones including:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/convert-google-docs-to-gm/dingigiembmnbjocifcoeiideggpkplj/related?hl=en" target="_blank">Convert Google Docs to Gmail drafts</a> - you can write and format an email in Google Docs and, with a click of a button, you can convert the Doc into a GMail email! (It is all explained in the <a href="https://support.cloudhq.net/how-to-convert-google-docs-to-gmail/" target="_blank">company's blog post</a>)</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/momentum/laookkfknpbbblfpciffpaejjkokdgca?hl=en" target="_blank">Momentum</a> - Replace new tab page with a personal dashboard featuring to-do, weather, and inspiration.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpnBbLh59ghTJUDPvgBHHwNg8rkBtLjiR2P_0MJpps-nEECcFGdOdfFReJ7tdaJ3iwzEqkRzk22-inddg1s7K8-snJDzIhZ59c6mivVjOxYFXEVPRHo2GDnHPq3o_m83UtY_dQpuVzN3iG/s1600/e8577c17-750f-45ab-91bc-78d9f838acd0-955e7e5a-e991-4e33-8a94-5cdea041a2c1-v1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="398" data-original-width="398" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpnBbLh59ghTJUDPvgBHHwNg8rkBtLjiR2P_0MJpps-nEECcFGdOdfFReJ7tdaJ3iwzEqkRzk22-inddg1s7K8-snJDzIhZ59c6mivVjOxYFXEVPRHo2GDnHPq3o_m83UtY_dQpuVzN3iG/s200/e8577c17-750f-45ab-91bc-78d9f838acd0-955e7e5a-e991-4e33-8a94-5cdea041a2c1-v1.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This blog post will not do the tool justice as I was too busy playing to really capture as I learned...but here is what I have to say.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Google Data Studio is a powerhouse of a tool that helps you visualize data. It is a monster of a tool but basically, we played around with some NHL statistics to create a report that looks like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibkBAeYTxe1vxGTA653iGqbbA2KruIt8FCY3GNYAUHWop3k2KlJqf8L2edrjcHJu0DYNndTDKKbpea74vaNhrXpL8WK04cIUZXdtbT8HbnnqWn99dQgbHZZI0JOk43txoQTeB57zJw3Ghp/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-05-03+at+12.20.37+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="837" data-original-width="1600" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibkBAeYTxe1vxGTA653iGqbbA2KruIt8FCY3GNYAUHWop3k2KlJqf8L2edrjcHJu0DYNndTDKKbpea74vaNhrXpL8WK04cIUZXdtbT8HbnnqWn99dQgbHZZI0JOk43txoQTeB57zJw3Ghp/s400/Screen+Shot+2019-05-03+at+12.20.37+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
In many ways, it is easier than manipulating data in a Sheet - no need for functions. But grab some data and start playing around. You can use their <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1GrI5AEqNdgdnxurepGTINtpaCML4LYF1s-Ardgqn5cs/edit#slide=id.p" target="_blank">slide deck</a> for info to play with and see a little of what the tool offers.Jen Giffenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01601040540077581038noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8967231018531866202.post-39192570473878896632019-05-03T08:16:00.000-07:002019-05-03T08:16:58.280-07:00The New NFB<a href="https://www.nfb.ca/education/" target="_blank">The National Film Board</a> has a bunch of new and coming soon features that were highlighted in this presentation.<br />

The slide deck included some great videos including:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>how to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTvlKnCUaU4" target="_blank">create your own badge</a> - check out the <a href="http://thenounproject.com/">Noun Project</a> for icons to use in your badges.</li>
<li>creating a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G9qEudqTvk" target="_blank">badge board</a> - I love the idea to gray out badges that have not been earned yet. </li>
<li>a Google Sheet add-on called <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/magic-digital-badges/abiefjfeaeggbileejegjfhjkkjpjpmb?hl=en-GB">Magic Digital Badges</a>. I have also seen another badging add-on called <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/badgeu/gjhjnmoiffeifaaeppifcihokokpoebp/reviews">BadgeU</a> that comes highly recommended. </li>
</ul>
<br />
My pal <a href="https://twitter.com/KimPollishuke" target="_blank">Kim Pollishuke</a> (<a href="http://shukesandgiff.com/">#ShukesAndGiff</a>) created this badge in a few minutes for our colleague <a href="https://twitter.com/jeffgonsalvesyr" target="_blank">Jeff</a> who rocked the karaoke stage a few nights ago.<br />

She shared some fascinating information...and some very cool apps like:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="https://otter.ai/">Otter Voice Notes</a> - Record and review in real time. Search, play, edit, organize, and share your conversations from any device.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.caloriemama.ai/">Calorie Mama</a> - A smart camera app that uses deep learning to track nutrition from food images.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.redbull.com/ca-en/oscar-ai-automatic-recycling-trash-can">Oscar the AI trash bin</a>! </li>
<li>A FREE <a href="https://www.classcentral.com/course/independent-elements-of-ai-12469">course to understand AI</a> from the University of Helsinki</li>
<li>Check out <a href="https://www.redbubble.com/">Redbubble</a> to sell your art!</li>
</ul>
<div>
She also, near the beginning offered this advice:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It was fast paced and full of great info! Jessi brought everything back to great pedagogical uses. Some cool tips I took away<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMQLgItbnzQEGNGqZZjzLRp675Q4wcATqA4P9MeDBa78JtammEkP-8IpvpMTv2nf6eFCDnsv88f1ek0J70rWa6_msbhL8Ehg1EGWmupdiZwOLZi3662k6149X-Cmy6Dg-6HvpVBfKgVk8v/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-05-02+at+1.04.06+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1434" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMQLgItbnzQEGNGqZZjzLRp675Q4wcATqA4P9MeDBa78JtammEkP-8IpvpMTv2nf6eFCDnsv88f1ek0J70rWa6_msbhL8Ehg1EGWmupdiZwOLZi3662k6149X-Cmy6Dg-6HvpVBfKgVk8v/s400/Screen+Shot+2019-05-02+at+1.04.06+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>Her first slide was full of Scrabble tiles (see above) - each one was linked to the slide with the apps for that letter - VERY cute idea.</li>
<li>Save your favourite <a href="https://www.bitmoji.com/">Bitmojis</a> in <a href="http://keep.google.com/">Google Keep</a></li>
<li>Use <a href="https://www.apple.com/ca/clips/">Apple Clips</a> to add closed captioning to videos - great for accessibility.</li>
<li><a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/drivetunes/labgcacinobdnkfndodfkfeabbjckbnj?hl=en">DriveTunes</a> - a new extension to me - DriveTunes allows you to play .mp3 and .m4a audio files right from Google Drive.</li>
<li>She talked about ways to help student with executive functioning disorders keep organized with <a href="http://keep.google.com/">Google Keep </a>- totally going home to do this with my son!</li>
<li><a href="https://miniverse.io/experience?cr=2824&e=57-north">57 North</a> - a choose your own adventure app for your MergeCube.</li>
<li>Make challenges for students to become <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MRVQJcs3alBjRZFJWacnq0mstErSh0en/view">Chrome Kings</a> - experts in areas of Chrome (or any app for that matter!)</li>

I think the learning is so rich when learners (young and old) get dirty (metaphorically and sometimes literally).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmwgOCNu-ZUZVwyrZ2juJCVYw65X4tSXBJrn0nLtKmL_AGbHWs-6OqGStL5laoYk9P59RtOAesA0L6F8ucH5ysFmxgXjuXAcyRP-_Z7AaVrQjgHgk-mIBf-wgy7MqO9KaXCnIUYIrAE-Zb/s1600/Maker+education+isn%25E2%2580%2599t+about+the+stuff+we+can+make%252C+it%25E2%2580%2599s+about+the+connections%252C+community+and+the+meaning+we+can+make%25E2%2580%25A6+-+MakerEd.org.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmwgOCNu-ZUZVwyrZ2juJCVYw65X4tSXBJrn0nLtKmL_AGbHWs-6OqGStL5laoYk9P59RtOAesA0L6F8ucH5ysFmxgXjuXAcyRP-_Z7AaVrQjgHgk-mIBf-wgy7MqO9KaXCnIUYIrAE-Zb/s640/Maker+education+isn%25E2%2580%2599t+about+the+stuff+we+can+make%252C+it%25E2%2580%2599s+about+the+connections%252C+community+and+the+meaning+we+can+make%25E2%2580%25A6+-+MakerEd.org.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I really enjoyed listening to Robin Holtie (<a href="http://twitter.com/@MrHoltie" target="_blank">@MrHoltie</a>). He offered some really fresh and fun ideas on making (mostly in intermediate). From using Micro:Bits to create a Harry Potter style Sorting Hat to a Self - Contained Mars Space Station to support the reading of Weir's <u>The Martian</u> to Makedos in math, he offered some great ideas I had not heard before.<br />
<br />
He also introduced me to <a href="https://www.destinationimagination.org/" target="_blank">Destination Imagination</a> - program "that teaches "21st century" skills and STEM principles to kindergarten through university level students through collaborative problem-solving challenges." It is a 9-month program, it is $105 to register and about $7 per student for the competition (going to finals means going to the US so prices increase there). Totally something to check out for class or as an after school club.<br />
<br />
You can find inspiration in <a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_FbiXhVS23PMNWdwaI1omDj4yv3rDYkKTJzU00qFpEE/edit#slide=id.g35f391192_00" target="_blank">Robin's Slide Deck</a>.<br />

Also, I sat beside my friend <a href="https://twitter.com/MsLauraCollins" target="_blank">Laura Collins</a> who is such an inspiration to me when it comes to coding and making (esp with littles) who told me about <a href="https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=klever+kutter&gclid=Cj0KCQjwh6XmBRDRARIsAKNInDGc0vcPP0K9r6luIjWSGWyNluidfpo8plLqykDIQAyuB0Cp-M2H4zIaAl7aEALw_wcB&hvadid=229962140294&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9000768&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=e&hvrand=11091246260662261516&hvtargid=kwd-300292609650&hydadcr=27172_10621343&tag=googcana-20&ref=pd_sl_199zvet0hi_e" target="_blank">Klever Kutters</a> to use when cutting cardboard.<br />

I got some great recommendations. (I am still working on my listicle - promise!)<br />

<br />
Coming to connect I really wanted to learn more in person. <a href="https://twitter.com/LDSBTech" target="_blank">Mistene Clapp</a> gave a great presentation showcasing many apps for AR/VR in the classroom. A few to check out include:<br />
<br />

This means that I will have a media pass and access to the conference with a chance to document what I am learning.<div>

<br /></div>

I have found ISTE to be overwhelming (understatement) and pulled in so many directions. My plan is to do learning in the expo hall and in the playgrounds and document while I go. The blogs will be microblogs - short little tidbits of sharing..longer than Tweets, shorter than I normally write.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Over the next few days, I am at the Connect 2019 conference so I am going to practice here...be prepared for a bunch of blogs! So....</div>

Today I have another cool share...the "Select Who Gets Your Reply" option. <br />
<br />
You know those times when someone hits reply all instead of reply? I find that happens on Twitter all the time. Sometimes I just want to send a GIF or short reply to the person who posted the tweet, not the other 15 people tagged in it. This is possible...here is how:<br />
<br />
When you click the reply icon, you see this screen:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkOMLi9TRYbjX6j-JQY5i8VnAjD9SCu1rdMCkBaglccvmh9lix5ZEsyPl5-RWsE1AoBb7eVWU_4eLaB5dV_lDALzjXEvYdM104CY5dbbai60faq4-uEttSzlnV34dAnLUQHFdgeZn2gUps/s1600/people.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="333" data-original-width="499" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkOMLi9TRYbjX6j-JQY5i8VnAjD9SCu1rdMCkBaglccvmh9lix5ZEsyPl5-RWsE1AoBb7eVWU_4eLaB5dV_lDALzjXEvYdM104CY5dbbai60faq4-uEttSzlnV34dAnLUQHFdgeZn2gUps/s400/people.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Instead of just typing your reply, you can click the names to get a list of all those tagged in the tweet. Then, you can check the box beside "Others in this conversation" to remove all others from the list of who will receive the reply. You can also uncheck names individually to only include some of the others.</div>

It works well for presentation in classes as well.<br />
<br />
I used to paste the URL on each slide, but inevitably I miss a slide, or have to move it around based on content on the slide already.<br />
<br />
Then, I discovered the Master Slide. By changing the master slide I can add the URL (usually a custom one made with <a href="http://bitly.com/" target="_blank">bitly</a>) when I make my first slide, then I know it will be there, and can place text and objects on my slides around it.<br />
<br />
To access the Master Slide in Google Slides, go to Slide --> Edit Master. Then I add features and make changes as necessary.<br />
<br />
Changing the master slides in a deck has many uses...change all headers to the same font/size, change features on only one slide layout, and more.Jen Giffenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01601040540077581038noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8967231018531866202.post-51013500853399860572019-02-27T17:13:00.000-08:002019-02-27T17:13:14.736-08:00Have a case of Tab-itis? <br />
About a year ago I started using a Chrome extension called <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/toby-mini/gfdcgfhkelkdmglklfbndgopaihmoeci?hl=en" target="_blank">Toby Mini</a>. Toby "organizes your browser tabs into Toby so you can access key resources in one-click". It has made my workflow so easy...honestly I could not live without it.<br />
<br />
Once you install the extension you are able to organize web resource in one place! I have a collection for meeting minutes and Agendas, projects I am working on, resources for <a href="http://bit.ly/ShukesAndGiff" target="_blank">#ShukesAndGiff</a> and more.<br />
<br />
Let me show you what it is like:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li><b>Load your week.</b> Every Sunday I load up all the links I am going to need for meetings and such in the week ahead. This saves me a lot of time in my day and I have less anxiety is I am running late.</li>
<li><b>Load tabs for a conference/class</b>. By using the <b>open all # tabs</b> I can quickly open tabs I need for a presentation or class. This allows time for items like videos to buffer and I can meet attendees or students instead of loading up resources.</li>
<li><b>Have all project resources in one place. </b> Instead of searching all over my Google Drive (even my starred files can get out of control) and through my Chrome bookmarks, I make Collections to have everything in one place.</li>
</ol>
